The cytotoxic and antineoplastic compounds used in traditional Chinese medicine are presented: indirubin and related bisindoles, phenanthridine and benzo(c)phenathridine alkaloids, Rabdosia [Plectranthus] diterpene oridonin, irisquinone A, cantharidin and related compounds, arsenic trioxide, trichosanthin and related ribosome-inactivating proteins, and polysaccharides from fungal and plants. In vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials evaluating the performance of these compounds are reviewed.
