Histological examinations were made of the organs of ten dogs that died after the subcutaneous injection of a suspension of venom of Buthus tamulus (F.) at 3 mg venom/kg and of the organs of three adults and four children who had died within 36 h of receiving scorpion stings on the Deccan plateau of South India, where this species is plentiful. It is concluded that disseminated intravascular coagulation and resultant haemorrhages can occur in cases of scorpion-venom poisoning and explain the complex symptoms of such poisoning recorded in the literature. Mention is made of scorpions known to inflict poisonous stings in various countries other than India and Jamaica.
