Canine heartworm disease in southeastern Michigan

The incidence of heartworm (Dipetalonema spp. and Dirofilaria immitis) infection in 1,977 dogs in 3 localities in south-east Michigan, USA, during January-July 1971 were 22% in Belleville and 6% in both Detroit and Farmington. In the Belleville group, significantly fewer dogs less than 2 years old were infected than dogs in older age groups. There was also a significantly higher incidence in male dogs than in females. In all 3 localities, the infection was more prevalent in dogs kept outdoors than in those kenneled at night.
