A combination of droperidol (20 mg/ml) and fentanyl citrate (0.4 mg/ml) was found to be a safe and reliable anesthetic agent for use in the rat. An intramuscular injection of 0.016 ml/100 g of body weight produced sufficient restraint and loss of sensory reflexes for abdominal surgery; 0.05 ml of the same combination per 100 g of body weight produced sufficient anesthesia for eye enucleation. In the hamster, the combination produced unpredictable effects and was unsatisfactory.
