One hundred and ninety eight cases of gonococcal infection seen in male patients in the Diagnostic Centre of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) of the Seville School of Medicine from March 1977 to October 1982 are reported. Mean age of patients was 25 years. They represent 14 % of the total mate patients seen at the Centre. 26 % were homosexual and in 13 % gonococcal infection had been acquired during sexual intercourse with prostitutes. 27 % had been symptomatic for more than a week. 96,46 % had uretral infections; in 2,02 % the site of infection was anorectal and in 1,51 % it was pharyngeal. 1,62 of uretral infections were asymptomatic. 28 % were STD with mixed etiology, and the most frequently found association was N. gonorrhoeae and U. urealyticum. Gram stain of the uretral exudate was diagnostic in 95 % of cases of symptomatic urethritis. 10 % of urethritis were diagnosed only by culture. 0nly 2 strains (1,01 %) were ß-lactamase-producing organisms. 12 % of patients developed postgonococcal urethritis; 6,56 % had reinfections, and 1,51 % relapsed.
