Primary hepatic hydatid cyst with intrathoracic extension

A 55-year-old male presented with fever and persistent productive cough of 2 weeks duration [India; date not given]. Abdominal physical examination showed non-tender hepatomegaly. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the upper abdomen showed an enlarged liver with hypoattenuating outer rim without any evidence of spetae or calcification. A diagnosis of hydatid cyst was made based on conventional skiagram and CT scan. Clinical examination proved it to be a case of secondarily infected hydatid abscess of the liver bursting into the right pleuropulmonary region. The patient had an uneventful recovery.
