The division of labour in the households of peasant-workers

This investigation covered 780 households. Needs are satisfied within the household structure depending on the economic character of the household and the occupational structure of its members. There is a very strong tendency to preserve the traditional division of labour but some movement towards a more shared capacity for decision making. The findings do not offer convincing data indicating that the farms of peasant workers are threatened with a takeover by women. Only in 10% of farms do the women make all the decisions on the way the farm is run; in 36% of households there is joint decision making and in others it is spread amongst more family members who do farm work.
