Female infanticide in Tamil Nadu: some evidence

The paper discusses evidence from a field survey on the existence of the practice of female infanticide in Tamil Nadu, India. Primary health care records analysed provide a strong corroborative evidence that the phenomenon is not confined to a few blocks of Madurai and Salem districts, but is seen in an almost contiguous belt from Madurai to North Arcot Ambedkar districts. Introductory data present census data from 1941-91 across Tamil Nadu to demonstrate the trend. Data to examine the incidence of female infanticide are drawn from questionnaires of 1 037 630 households during 1995.
