Although most states in the USA maintain written records for the surveillance of epidemics, the information collected varies between states and many states do not computerize the data. A pilot project was undertaken in 4 states using a standard protocol and computer programme to examine the feasibility of CDC efforts to develop a uniform system of epidemic surveillance. The system was successfully implemented in each state but large variation in the number of reported events (standardized for state population) probably reflects differences in notification completeness.David Dunn.
