Tourism development in the 1960s and 1970s in Languedoc-Roussillon, France, was one of the major development operations of recent years. An econometric model of the region was used to calculate the impact of the coastline development operation. The scheme matched the hopes of the developers on both a regional and a national level. Its impact on growth, employment and the balance of payments was particularly outstanding. The continuation of the projects over twenty years was crucial to the success of the scheme.
