Rabbits are wide spread farm animals and pets, which are kept in the most diverse areas. The evaluation of rabbit husbandries in regard to animal welfare legislation is often complicated by different and contradictive recommendations of various organisations, which should partly be revised. In the following article some regulations and guidelines are discussed. In addition, some aspects for the keeping of rabbits in accordance with their behavioural needs are outlined, some frequent shortcomings regarding the keeping of rabbits are described and possibilities for taking official measures are presented.
