A tension exists between, on the one hand, the almost self-justificatory aspect of modern medicine's drive towards constantly developing better methods, and, on the other, the feeling that this development is out of control. A critical, philosophical investigation of this ambiguity should aim at strengthening the clinician's autonomy and integrity.
