African women food farmers will be focus of new Hunger Project initiative

More than one-third of the people in sub-Saharan Africa suffers from malnutrition because of drought and lack of transportation. African food production has declined by about 23% in each of the past 25 years. The Hunger Project, in its efforts to address these concerns, will provide $1 million to women throughout sub-Saharan Africa and will help design economic empowerment programs involving credit, savings, and land ownership. In addition to increasing food production, the initiative will also increase the status of women. The Hunger Project intends the program to be successful as it continues with its efforts to attract international funding. The initiative hopes to serve as an example to other nongovernmental organizations.
