Pakistan is simultaneously facing six major crises as the next century begins. The crises of identity and ideology stem from the fact that Pakistanis are still unable to mutually agree upon who they are as a nation, where they belong, what they believe in, and what they want to do. The crises of law, Constitution, and political system are manifested in the public's disenchantment with the democratic political system. The crisis of economy, on the other hand, is due to Pakistan's total dependence on foreign assistance. The severity of this economic crisis has affected their sovereignty and national security. Moreover, contradicting objectives and concerns causes the crisis of foreign policy. The crisis of civil society is demonstrated in the low turnouts for elections and the continuing deterioration of law and order. Whereas the crises of national security is considered as the culmination of all the other crises mentioned. This article further cites some suggestions on how to resolve these crises, and offers a brief discussion concerning Pakistan's relationship with India.
