Planning for manpower requirements of dairy industry in India

Teaching, research, extension and training in different branches of agriculture, which is controlled by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at national level, involves 26 agricultural universities, 27 veterinary colleges, 10 dairy science colleges, and 80 other agricultural colleges and institutes located in various States of India. At present the availability of milk does not meet the recommended daily per capita consumption. New technologies that could be applied and ways in which manpower should be utilized, to increase gross output and strengthen the infrastructure of the dairy industry, are discussed. Manpower required for successful dairying is dealt with in the broad categories of dairy research, dairy education and training, dairy management, and supervisory and technician manpower. Needs for improving the standard of dairy science training, for establishing a manpower information data base, and training in maintenance and repairs, are discussed.
