An analysis is made of the economic impact of tourism on the Korean economy and an assessment made of the desirability of developing the tourism sector. Following a review of tourism in Korea, the relative performance of tourist industries are compared with other export industries, and a detailed analysis of the sector undertaken in order to make recommendations for the maximization of the economic benefits of tourism. The impact of tourism on income generation, foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and the degree of linkage between tourism and other economic sectors is estimated. Static and dynamic input-output models were developed. Analysis suggests that tourism has a substantial direct and indirect impact on the Korean economy. More policy emphasis should be given to tourism in the future and the sector should be carefully planned and integrated into both other sector plans, and as part of national development plans.
