In a study of 581 girls from the Roumanian Black Sea port and spa of Constanza (population about 156,000), the median age of menarche was found to be 13.47 + 0.05 years, SD 1.15 years. An analysis according to the number of children in the family of the girls revealed a significant linear relation between age at menarche and number of siblings. Menarche was later by an average of 2.1 months for every additional sibling. This relation probably reflects the effect of general socio-economic and nutritional conditions of the family.
