The results of laboratory tests can be unreliable even when a competent laboratory performs the tests. The physician can, however, control many of the factors that affect the reliability of test results, such as time when the specimen is obtained, the physical activity of the patient, drugs the patient has been taking, and temperature at which the specimen is kept. If a specimen is to be mailed, specific directions for mailing provided by the laboratory should be followed.
