This study is the latest of a series first begun in 1968. The initial 1968 survey showed a desire among the majority of rural school leavers to join the modern urban sector of employment, it is a trend which continues the town way of life rather than specific social or economic objectives which attracts most migrants. Farming is an unpopular vocation. Rural school leavers saw farming as a 'low' type of occupation. Rural-urban migration in Papua New Guinea, therefore, is an economic one based on the perceived imbalance of advantages between urban and rural life.
