Macarbomycin, a new antibiotic developed as a food additive, showed much greater antibacterial activity against procine E. coli strains carrying a transferable drug-resistance factor (R factor) than against a strain in which the R factor had been eliminated by the penicillin screening method. An E. coli strain with the fertility inhibition (Ffi+) R factor was more sensitive to macarbomycin than a strain with the 'fi' R factor. Macarbomycin decreased the R factor transfer frequency.
