Social security for the rural population. A study of some social services in selected rural areas of India

This article is based on an ILO field study of certain social welfare and health services in parts of Punjab and Haryana. It first outlines the medical and health services available in these two states - especially those provided by the 'primary health centres' - and then considers in greater detail what are known as the family and child welfare projects. These provide for the establishment of child development centres and family welfare centres. The first cater for children up to the age of 11 (services include medical checks and treatment, immunization, free milk, creches, nursery schools, play centres, etc.) while the family welfare centres provide training in and advice on a variety of domestic subjects for village women and especially young mothers. A final section deals with the provision made by the two states for cash benefits to relieve want and hardship among specific groups.
