Imported malaria in children (1993-1998)

During August 1993-June 1998, 11 children were diagnosed with malaria at the University Hospital Sant Joan de Deu, Barcelona, Spain. Seven patients had Plasmodium falciparum malaria, and four had P. vivax malaria. Six children were from Equatorial Guinea, 3 were from India and 2 were from Gambia. All patients presented with fever. Seven patients were treated with oral chloroquine; two patients then changed to quinine and oral doxycycline and 2 changed to quinine and intravenous clindamycin. Three patients were treated with quinine and oral clindamycin and one with quinine and intravenous clindamycin. All patients recovered from the infection.
