Bioactivity guided isolation of A. indicum (collected from Bangladesh) yielded eugenol [4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol], which was found to possess significant analgesic activity. At doses of 10, 30, and 50 mg/kg, eugenol exhibited 21.3, 42.25 and 92.96% inhibition of acetic acid-induced writhing in mice. At a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight, eugenol showed 33.4% prolongation of tail flicking time determined by the radiant heat method.
