In Fwidiem (Ghana) the cause of sterility was investigated in 398 women from infertile marriages. Vaginal stenoses resulting from previous treatment were found in 41 patients. The influence of gonorrhoea could not be studied. A myoma-tous uterus was present in 22, adnexitis/salpingitis in 83, residual pelviperitonitis in 37 and unspecified parametrial abnormalities in 32 patients. Retroflexion was present in 82. The menstrual cycle was studied and the tubal factor evaluated by insufflation. Of 318 infertile couples, 237 males underwent a physical examination and in 282 a sperm study was made. In 38 of the former both tests were distinctly small, and one was in 24 other cases, Azoospermia was present in 20, while 80 had a low spermatozoal density. In 76 testis biopsy specimens the thickness of the tubular wall showed a negative correlation with spermatozoal density. The results of the postcoitum test are discussed.
