The breed structure of the Karakul in South West Africa was determined by pedigree sampling methods. The study was performed on a 25% sample of all black, purebred lambs registered in the South West African Stud Book during 1960 and 1970. The basic pattern of the breed structure of the Karakul was similar to that found in many other studies, but it is dynamic owing to the present rapid expansion of the breed. The breed structure consists of a hierarchy of flocks with a pyramidal distribution which facilitates a quick flow of genetic material to the commercial industry.
