Morphologic and functional changes in the mucous membrane of the stomach in the early stage of opisthorchiasis

Histological examination of the gastric mucosa (by peroral biopsy) of 17 patients with opisthorchiasis revealed inflammation, cellular infiltration and necrotic lesions. The authors conclude that these lesions were allergic reactions to metabolic products of the parasite. Haematologically, the disease was characterized by leucocytosis, eosinophilia and accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Hyperbilirubinaemia, increased levels of serum alpha 2- and gamma -globulins, high gastric acidity and pepsin levels and increased blood pepsinogen levels were found.
