The results of medical genetic and population-geographic studies conducted by the Department of molecular fundamentals of genetics of the Institute of Molecular Genetics are summarized. Fine localization was carried out on gene chromosomes in Wilson-Konovalov disease, torsion dystonia DYT1 and progressive muscular dystrophy. Approaches are developed to the study of multifactor diseases as exemplified by ischemic heart disease and type II diabetes mellitus. Trends were revealed in the allele frequencies of some genes in a group of patients. Large number of Eastern European populations was analyzed with respect to four polymorphic DNA markers. Methods of gene geography and multidimensional mathematical analysis were used to show the complicated nature of interaction between persons of different ethnic origin in the region.
