Three papers in the May issue looked at nitric oxide and its role in protecting against cardiovascular disease. Jones et al. demonstrated that nitric oxide can limit myocardial injury during ischemia and suggested that impairment of nitric oxide may be partially responsible for maladaptation to ischemia in diabetes mellitus. Agullo et al. showed that pre-anoxic administration of L-arginine, a precursor of nitric oxide, enhanced the functional recovery of myocardium and also increased cGMP release in isolate rat hearts. Gupte et al. found that increased intracellular lactate concentrations reduced nitrovasodilator-induced relaxation of pulmonary arteries and decreased activation of guanylate cyclase during inhibition of endogenous superoxide dismutase activity.
