Cholesterol lowering action of vitamin P-like compounds in rats

The effect of different vitamin P-like compounds, viz. epicatechin, hesperidin and quercetin on gain in body and liver weight and on serum and liver cholesterol content of rats fed high carbohydrate-high fat diet for a period of 12 weeks was studied. These compounds were found to maintain body weight and counteract ill effects of cholesterol feeding but had no apparent effect on liver weight. They were effective in reducing the elevated cholesterol level significantly in both serum and liver of cholesterol fed rats. Results indicate that the degree of cholesterol reduction observed both in serum and liver was mainly confined to the esterified cholesterol fraction.
