Private entrepreneurs and academics are to jointly sequence the DNA of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster by December 1999. On January 27, the National Human Genome Research Institute announced it is assembling a group of NHGRI-funded sequencers led by Gerald Rubin of the University of California at Berkeley with the staff of Celera Genomics of Rockville, Maryland, a company set up in 1997 by Perkin-Elmer and DNA sequencer J. Craig Venter. The fly, with about 160 million bases, could soon be the most complex organism ever sequenced.
