Pattern of caries in relation to the pattern of soil fertility in the United States

Data from 69, 584 navy recruits were used. Minimum caries per mouth was recorded in recruits from the area of moderate rainfall and high agricultural fertility corresponding to a longitudinal, midcontinental belt approximately 2 States wide with the Mississippi River as western boundary. For this belt, cavities, fillings and total caries per mouth were: 8.38, 3.70 and 12.08, respectively. Westwards two further longitudinal belts gave values of 8.80, 4.30 and 13.10, and 9.10, 6.40 and 15.50.
