There is a progressive, dangerous decline in the number of physician-scientists. These researchers encompass all M.D.'s who devote all or most of their professional effort to the search for new knowledge about health and disease. Throughout an almost 30-year period, the success rates for M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s have been practically identical, but physician-scientists have become an increasingly smaller minority of those seeking and receiving National Institutes of Health project support.
