In this issue, biologists Patrick Brown and Vishwanath Iyer of Stanford University and their colleagues report using DNA chips to examine how entire sets of genes coordinate their activity. Using a DNA chip that allowed them to monitor over 8,600 genes simultaneously, the team discovered the addition of nutrients to a culture of connective tissue cells called fibroblasts stimulated both cell division and the genes for wound healing.
