In Mpumalanga Province, South Africa the zoonotic plague (Yersinia pestis infection) surveillance programme was revived in 1998, including bubonic plague syndrome in the list of immediately notifiable clinical conditions. A serological survey was conducted in peri-urban and rural areas of three districts, Meddelburg, Ermelo and Shongwe, and included rodents and dogs from which Siphonaptera were collected. None of the 276 dog and 167 rodent sera tested by the National Institute for Virology showed evidence of plague infection.
