Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia

A case is reported in a 47-year-old man from Spain , who developed fever after receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest revealed a nodule in the upper lobe of the left lung and amphotericin B (1 mg/kg daily) was started. Repeat CT scan 5 days later showed enlargement of the lung nodule and therapy was changed to liposomal amphotericin B (5 mg/kg daily). Aspergillus sp. was cultured from fine needle aspiration samples obtained under CT-guidance. The patient's condition deteriorated and he died 4 days later.
