To partly elucidate the relationship between homocysteine(Hcy) and thrombosis, we observed Hcy's effects on platelet aggregation and antithrombin activity of heparin cofactor in vitro. Platelet aggregation assay and chromogenic assay were used in this research. Homocysteine had no effects on platelet aggregation induced by ADP and thrombin or heparin cofactor's antithrombin activity in vitro (P > 0.05). There is no correlation between Hcy and the "ADP passway" of platelet aggregation. Thrombosis induced by Hcy does not depend on heparin cofactor's antithrombin activity either.
