An introduction to a special section on ischemic preconditioning in cardiac vascular muscle. Ischemic preconditioning is the most effective way of salvaging tissue from necrosis that results from ischemia-reperfusion injury. The elucidation of mechanisms of ischemic preconditioning holds great potential because such a therapy could spare the myocardium from severe damage following stunning or an acute myocardial infarction. The papers in this section fill in gaps in the knowledge concerning mechanisms of ischemic preconditioning and raise new questions about this area.
