The use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is discussed in the light of their ability to cause retinopathy, an unsuccessful complaint made against the author by a patient who claimed to have become blind as a result of chloroquine treatment for RA, and the literature search carried out as part of the investigation of the complaint. It is concluded that hydroxychloroquine is safer than chloroquine.
