Effect of glyceryl guaiacolate-thiamylal sodium solution on respiratory function and various hematologic factors of the horse

A solution containing glyceryl guaiacolate and 0.2% thiamylal sodium was administered i/v to 30 horses. Arterial and venous blood samples were collected prior to administration, immediately after administration, and after full recovery from the anaesthesia resulting from the infusion. The infusion did not have any significant effect on haemoglobin, packed cell volume, erythrocyte count, leucocyte count, differential leucocyte count, or blod glucose content in any of the horses. It depressed the arterial partial pressure of oxygen by blcoking transmission in internuncial neurons supplying the intercostal and abdominal musculature. This depression did not result in any clinical manifestation of hypoxia. There was no effect on arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide or blood pH. The depression of arterial partial pressure of oxygen was effectively counteracted by the administration of oxygen through a closed-circuit apparatus.
