Candesartan (Atacand) is a novel antagonist of angiotensin II AT1 receptors. It is a specific "insurmountable" antagonist which is characterized by its extremely high specificity and its very slow dissociation from the receptor. In the treatment of essential arterial hypertension it appears very efficacious and shows a dose dependent activity within the dose-range of 4 mg to 32 mg/day. The efficacy is maintained up to 36 hours after drug intake. Candesartan is excreted, unchanged, both in the feces (2/3) and urine (1/3). Side-effects are comparable to placebo.
