In order to enable a rapid orientation in systematic botanical literature of Malaysia, which may be necessary, for instance, when plants from that area have to be identified, this bibliography has been compiled as a precursor to the revisions in the "Flora Malesiana", where the complete literature on a subject is cited. Papers mainly dealing with allied sciences have been incorporated in so far as they are of important taxonomic significance. In the introduction the plan of the work is carefully explained. The selection has been made from a large complete MS. bibliography which is put at the disposal of the revisor of a group. The annotations are brief and are confined to the kind of the contents of the item. Special attention has been paid to keys; emphasis has been laid on references dealing with New Guinea and the Philippines. References in Dutch have been included. Neighboring areas to Malaysia and general works have been incorporated to a limited extent. Classification of the references is as follows: General botanical handbooks; General and local botanical bibliographies; Interpretations of early botanical works; Keys for identifying Malaysian plants; Floras and botanical enumerations of neighboring countries: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Ceylon, Burma, Siam, Indo-China, Hainan, Formosa, Micronesia, Melanesia, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Southeastern Polynesia; and, Flora of Malaysia proper: General works, Local works, for each island or province, and Proper taxonomic bibliography. Under this heading, the references have been geographically and taxonomically arranged. First come the general works dealing with the family, followed by the works dealing with one island or province, and the works dealing with the genera or with certain species of a genus. The bibliography contains nearly 4,200 items.
