Female status as a determinant of contraceptive use in Bangladesh

This paper maintains that the role and status of women is of vital importance to the success of population programmes. Its main objective is to investigate the socioeconomic factors that affect women's choice of contraception in rural Bangladesh. Data are derived from Savar upazila, about 40 km from Dhaka. The sample consists of 425 women with different rural occupations (labouring, household work, rural industry). The logistic regression analysis suggests that the following factors are important with regard to family size and the adoption of planning practices: (1) husband-wife communication; (2) contact with family planning workers; and (3) female education.
