The main objective of this paper is to investigate the socioeconomic status of women and to identify the factors that affect choice of contraception in rural Bangladesh. Data for the study were collected from Savar upazila and comprised of 425 women in different occupations selected for detailed interview. The paper considers the socioeconomic position and characteristics of women; the involvement of women in organizations; contraceptive use; and runs an ordinary least squares regression, with 11 independent variables included in order to determine factors that influence contraceptive use. Results indicate the importance of husband-wife communication, contact with family planning workers, education and employment levels, in determining the extent of contraception use.
