The wet weight and concentration of sialic acid of cervical mucus were serially determined during a menstrual cycle in 5 normal ovulatory women and correlated with the time of presumed ovulation as monitored by the basal body temperature and radioimmunoassay of serum luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone and estradiol (E2). The amount of cervical mucus increased 10- to 20-fold at ovulation time with a peak coinciding with the day of LH surge (1 day after E2 peak). The concentration of sialic acid decreased significantly at midcycle and increased after ovulation. The significance of these changes relative to cervical mucus viscosity and sperm penetrability is discussed.
