The author discusses the problem of the incompleteness of data available from the population and vital registration system in Indonesia. After a brief description of the historical background, the main focus is on the Indonesian Sample Vital Registration Project carried out between 1974 and 1977. The vital registration data collected during the course of the project are matched with data from the semiannual population survey by using the dual system approach. The accuracy of the data is evaluated, and reasons for incomplete registration are discussed.
