The writers respond to Jurgen Engel's article describing the homologs of vertebrate collagen that have been characterized in invertebrates, which appeared in the September 19, 1997, issue. They highlight the occurrence of collagen-like repeats encoded in bacteriophage genomes, which they have identified in genes encoding structural components of bacteriophage virions. A reply is included.
