Enteric infection in livestock and poultry caused by Salmonellae and Shigellae

Eight Salmonella strains belonging to four serological types, and two serologically identical Shigella strains were isolated from 303 animals (calves, goats, dogs, pigs and poultry). Seven of the eight Salmonella strains were isolated from animals which had died of salmonellosis. Only one of 167 rectal swabs from live animals yielded Salmonella. Three strains were S. typhimurium, two each were S. enteritidis and S. weltevreden, and one was S. choleraesuis. Two of 68 dogs yielded Shigella in their faeces, both serologically identified as Sh. flexneri 1b. They were isolated from two Alsation pups, one of which was suffereing from dysentery. All the salmonella strains were sensitive to erythromycin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and nitrofurans. The shigellae were sensitive to tetracycline, demethylchlortetracycline, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and nitrofurans.
