Modern autoclavable strain gages offer a unique opportunity for the study of forces involved in obstetric forceps deliveries. The authors are conducting a long-term evaluation comparing crossed and divergent obstetric forceps. Sample tracings are presented and the techniques of calculating the forces involved demonstrated. The potential for utilizing this biomedical engineering technique appears unlimited and worthy of additional exploration.
