Neomycin by mouth reduced methylmalonic acid in urine and plasma of a girl 5 years old with methylmalonic aciduria. It is thought that the effect of the antibiotic on the gastrointestinal bacteria reduced production of propionate, the immediate precursor of methylmalonic acid.
