A longitudinal study was carried out between January 1989 and December 1991 in Orissa, India, to quantify the different parameters of filarial transmission in an endemic area for Wuchereria bancrofti. Parasitological surveys, covering all age groups and both sexes, revealed that the mean microfilarial rate was 9.41%; the mean and median microfilarial density was 19.23 and 7.33, respectively. The per man hour density of the vector, Culex quinquefasciatus varied from 24.2 to 66.0, with a peak in January; the infection rate varied from 0.9 to 27.5%, and the infectivity rate ranged between 0.0 and 15.2%. Infectivity rate showed a high correlation with microfilarial rate (P<0.01) and per man hour density of adult mosquitoes (P<0.05). The highest numbers of L1, L2 and L3 W. bancrofti larvae per mosquito were 25, 22 and 11, respectively, and the average L3 load per infective mosquito ranged from 1.0 to 7.2. The L3 load showed a high correlation with the microfilarial rate (r = 0.845, P<0.01) whereas no correlation was seen with microfilarial density.
